Rafael Nadal Leaves Himself Bloodied
Rafael Nadal cut himself on the bridge of his nose with his own racket when it sprung off the ground after a shot, leaving him bloodied and dizzy during his second-round win at the US Open.
The play was delayed by nearly five minutes during a medical timeout in the fourth set in a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, 6-1 win against Fabio Fognini in a match that began on Thursday night,
It turned out to be a strange and equally scary scene when Nadal immediately smiled, dropped his racket, placed one palm in front of his face, and then placed both hands on his head.
At least Nadal was able to joke about it later during his interview on the court.
When asked if he had experienced this before, he laughed and replied, "With a golf club, but not with a tennis racket.
"How did he feel?"Well, a little dizzy at first," said Nadal, who won four of his 22 Grand Slam titles at the US Open, most recently in 2019, the last time he took part in a hard court tournament.
"The episode came at the first point of the match with Nadal taking a 3-0 lead in the fourth set and was clearly in charge after skipping the opening set for the second game in a row this week.
