NASA spacecraft set to crash

NASA will use a spacecraft later this month to test a planetary defense method that could one day save Earth.

The Double Asteroid Redirect Test spacecraft, also known as DART, will be used as a panacea to crash into an asteroid not far from Earth on September 26.

The mission is an international collaboration to protect the world from future asteroid impacts.

"While the asteroid poses no threat to Earth, this is the world's first test of kinetic impact technology, which uses spacecraft to deflect an asteroid to protect the planet," NASA said Thursday.

Now, 10 months later, DART will overtake the asteroid by performing three orbit correction maneuvers over the next three weeks.

"If DART hits Dimorphos at 15,000 mph as planned, this kinetic impactor will test the Earth defense theory.

Dart will not change the orbit of Didymos. Its purpose is to change the motion of the Moon Dimorphous.

DART will give them data to strengthen this defense plan.
