Graeme McDowell says peers should determine

VIRGINIA WATER, England - Graeme McDowell is well aware that he is not the most popular person at Wentworth,

As a member of the LIV golf team that turned the flagship event of the DP World Tour into a referendum between the established tours and Saudi Arabia.

He explained after his opening round at the BMW PGA Championship that his only wish this week was the need to compete

And admitted that he was considering withdrawing from the event due to the controversy surrounding the inclusion of 18 LIV players.

In the end, he insisted that it is his teammates, not the media or fans, or sponsors, who should decide whether he and other LIV players are allowed to play in European Tour events.

"McDowell and other LIV players were assessed fines and suspensions during a Eurotour upheld by a British arbitrator in July.

Rory McIlroy, the most outspoken advocate of the PGA Tour and the status quo, rejected McDowell's suggestion of a player mandate to determine the fate of LIV players.

"At this point with the legal stuff and everything, you should just go by the book," McIlroy said. "

"It's mind-boggling that it's come to the point where the future of his golf career is in the hands of one person
